Griffith House in Sydney’s Bondi had undergone a renovation in the 1990s which, 30 years later, looked tired and dated. Anthony Gill Architects designed a streamline envelope which opened up the interior to light and greater connection to the outdoor spaces. The clients are keen entertainers and needed a better flow and more useable space for their family of four. Extensive joinery by Captive Cabinetmaking is both minimal and seamless in the kitchen and more expressive in the study with a storage and display unit in a punchy emerald green. Window seats and integrated bookshelves make the best use of the space. Access to available light was increased through substantial additional glazing on the ground floor and a skylight that punches through from the roof. The footprint of the master bedroom was increased by enclosing the existing balcony and new bathrooms tiled in classic mosaics were installed. Considered transitions between spaces combine terrazzo, timber and carpeted areas speaking to the clever detailing in this sparely crafted home.
