This Federation semi in Sydney’s Randwick required the careful restoration of the original part of the house and the replacement of a 1990’s rear addition with a new two-storey, light-filled timber pavilion where the family were to spend most of their time. With clients who had a clear grasp on the architectural diagram we undertook this substantial project including the interior elements – designed by Handelsmann + Khaw working in conjunction with the client.

The significant scale of the northern elevation, due to the sheer length of the side laneway, has been calibrated to the right level of articulation on the façade with horizontal shadow lines created by the weatherboard against the vertical timber batten screen and fence.

With a deliberate approach towards how the old part of the house and the new interventions are detailed, a stylistic continuity is maintained by subtle clues that orientate you from the existing house to the new. Windows, doors, mouldings and cornices have been restored in the original house and a newly created archway acts as the transition between the two zones.

A clean shell with carefully crafted junction details provided the context, enabling the interior materials and furnishings to create the space.
